After Singapore, Hong kong ban Everest and MDH, Centre to test samples of all Indian Spice brands

Three spice products of MDH and the fish curry masala of Everest contained a pesticide- Ethylene oxide, which has been classified as a 'Group 1 carcinogen' by the IARC

Ethylene oxide serves as a disinfectant, fumigant, sterilising agent and insecticide, mainly used to sterilise medical equipment and to reduce microbial contamination in spices.

Classification as 'Group 1 carcinogen', means it has enough evidence to conclude that it can cause cancer in humans.

Exposure to the pesticide can affect the eyes, skin, nose, throat, and lungs, and damage the brain and nervous system

There is a ban on using ethylene oxide in food items in India. Strict action will be taken if harmful substances are found in Indian spices. There is a provision for criminal proceedings also.
